A musty smell from an AC usually means mould or mildew buildup in the coil or drain pan, a sour or stale smell often appears the first time an AC is switched on after a long idle period, and a burning smell is the one that means you should switch the AC off immediately and have it inspected.
This almost always points to moisture sitting somewhere it shouldn't — commonly the drain pan or the coil surface — where mould and mildew can grow, especially after monsoon season or extended periods of light use.
