The clearest warning signs of AC repair overcharging are a technician who won't give a written quote before starting work, insists on a full gas refill without checking for a leak first, and can't or won't explain what exactly is being charged for on the final bill.
None of these alone proves dishonesty, but more than one or two together is a real reason to get a second opinion.
A trustworthy technician diagnoses first, explains what's wrong in plain language, gives you a specific price before starting the repair (not just the visit charge), and is willing to show you the faulty part they're replacing. If any part of that process is skipped or rushed, it's reasonable to ask why.
Ask directly: 'What exactly am I being charged for, and can I see the old part?' A technician confident in their diagnosis won't mind the question. If you're still unsure, it's completely reasonable to pause, get a second quote, and compare — a legitimate repair need doesn't disappear in the time it takes to get a second opinion.
Yes, before starting any repair beyond the basic inspection — a verbal 'it'll cost around X' isn't the same as a specific quote you can hold them to.
A nominal diagnostic or visit charge is standard practice across the industry; what's not standard is that fee being unusually high or not disclosed upfront before the technician arrives.
Yes, and you should — a technician replacing a genuinely faulty part will have no issue showing it to you as proof of the work done.
